Product teams have awesome product launches when they have clear goals, deliver a release on time, and keep everyone on the same page. This is easy if you work with a really small team or do not have any complexity in your business or teams. But for many of us, it’s not that simple.
Whether we want to admit it or not — release planning has a major impact on the business. Well managed releases depend on the team working efficiently together. When done right, great releases create thought-leadership, excite customers, and motivate the team.
To make life easier for product, project, and engineering managers everywhere, we just dramatically improved how releases are managed in Aha!
Multiple release templates
You can now set one or more release templates by product to include specific phases and milestones. This allows you to specify a default set of activities that will always be automatically generated when you create a new release.
You can set as many phases and milestones as you want per template and rearrange them by editing the template and pulling them into the proper order. You can also set the duration and color per phase or milestone or allow the system to automatically generate it for you.
Templates created at the product line level can be used by any of the child products. Templates created for a product can only be used by that product.
When you create a new release you can choose one of the following template options:
- Default — a simple template that has been created for all accounts
- Your custom template — any template that you created for the product line or product
- No template — choose to create a release and enter all of the phases and milestones manually
Note that the end date of the last phase or milestone will automatically align to the release date that you specify when creating the release.
Creating multiple release templates can save you a ton of time if you perform different type of work for a given product. For example, you may have major and minor releases during a quarter and require different levels of cross-functional team involvement and planning. You can now create both types of release frameworks and choose the one you need when you start planning for the new release.
It takes a cross-functional team to successfully launch great products and support customers. By using multiple release templates per product you can easily bring consistency to the release planning process and keep the team organized and focused on what needs to get done.
